Italian Smart Cities – Part 2

You may have read last week the first part of my showcase on Italian smart cities, here is Part 2 and I will discuss what some of the largest cities in Italy are doing in order to be smarter and more sustainable in their development.

Milan has the biggest economy, population and size in all of Italy, this is why it is one of the leading smart cities.

They have invested in laboratories which are involved in cutting-edge research to take the metropole one step forward. From market places to transportation, Milan has transformed is in the process of transforming into a futuristic urban area.

Rome, the capital of Italy is involved in developing system technologies for citizen engagement and creating digital solutions for their basic needs. For homeowners, the new homes in these digital cities are integrated with security and alarm systems activated by motion sensors. This system can even detect gas and water leaks and alerts the occupant of the impending danger. The smart services also conserve energy by observing the lights, boilers and other electrical fittings to reduce excess use. The system analyses the efficiency, prepares advances reports and recommends actions to enhance the efficiency.

Torino is another smart city which is dedicated to citizen engagement through the expansion of goods and services provided to each citizen.

Napoli also deserves a mention as it has installed LED lamps all over the city to assist transportation, save money spent on electricity and protect the local environment. A smart city is not only a digital city but it also takes into account the environmental parameters and is dedicated to cutting down pollution and waste. Sensors to detect air and noise pollution as well as humidity help keep up with the atmospheric conditions at all times. The project has been installed in busy areas and regularly sends updates to a cloud application. There is additional equipment for filtering the polluted air and release clean air into the environment. Systems for tracking disposal are implemented for waste management.

Italian cities are starting their journey towards becoming truly smart cities and the signs are very promising. With good leadership and a solid expansion of digital services to all citizens, the cities of Italy have the opportunity to really improve the quality of life for all citizens.
